The flight fromKL to Paris was long - very long. We both slept a bit but the bottom line is 13 hours couped up in an economy class seat is just not much fun. They did at least feed us.... and feed us and feed us.
We got to Paris at about 6:15am, got our luggage and then a bus to Gare Montparnasse (Montparnasse Station). With just a bit of difficulty we then managed to find our hotel and to Fiona's surprise the hotel looked very "tres chic" (chalk one up for www.tripadvisor.com). So at about 8:30am we set off on foot. We walked for about 40 minutes to the base of the Eiffel Tower. It really is an impressive sight when you see it for the first time. In a funny sort of way it reminds me of the Harbour Bridge. We had a short wait of 20 minutes in the queue before we started our walk up to level 2. There is a lookout platform at both these levels which we stopped at. The views of Paris were superb! The climb to level 2 was 689 steps. We then got on a lift to the top of the tower. It was a little cool at the top but the view was even more impressive.
After leaving the tower we took a river cruise on the Seine. The trip lasted an hour and there was plenty to see - Notre Dane, The Louvre, Musee D'Orsay and lots more. There are countless bridges across the Sein, the oldest over 400 years old.
We then walked to the Arc De Triumphe. Along the way we stopped at a small sandwhich shop and bought some lunch. We took the lunch and ate it at the base of the Arc. The arc is truely impressive. More so than I would have given it credit for. Instead of going to the top right then we bought 2 day museum passes and walked down the Champs Elysees all the way to the Place De La Concorde. There is an obolisk here that marks the spot of where the royals met the chop after the French Revolution.
We then went and saw Monet's water lillies at the Musee De l'Orangerie. There were 2 rooms and 4 very large monet's in each room. We made a quick pass of the rest of the musee and took in most of the old masters and then noticed it was still only 4pm. So we walked the short distance to the Louvre and spent 2 hours looking around. What can I say? I don't usually like that sort of stuff but the sheer grandeur and size of these pieces just needs to be seen to be believed. Of course we saw the most famous face of our time. The Mona Lisa is actuslly bigger than I thought it would be and still pulls a crowd, just like the Venus de'milo.
After the Louvre we walked back to the hotel (over 11km all up for the day) past all the small shops and patisseries, sizing up what we would eat later on. Finally back at the hotel we showered and changed and .......both fell asleep. What with the long flight over with hardly any sleep and the huge day walking we were beat. Maybe we'll go out tomorrow night.
I can't wait for tomorrow!
