The Mekong Delta

I decided to take a two-day organized tour of the Mekong Delta from Saigon because it would save both time and money over doing it independently. We left Saigon by boat and traveled south to My Tho. From there, we took a smaller boat on to Ben Tre. Here's where you start to see why it's so cheap to do these things. We were taken to a nicely landscaped part of an island and sat for a tasting of various dried fruits, tea, etc. Then we went a little further on for a fresh fruit tasting. I'm always happy to do a bit of snacking, but of course we are being given all these tastes so that we'll buy more of the stuff. Later on in the day the same was true of our trip to see how they make "coconut candy", which is sort of like a taffy. I shouldn't comlain because I knew all this was coming and it was fairly pleasant. Just not very exciting.
There were some better parts of the day. We took a ride in a small poled boat down a quiet canal, and got an hour to explore Ben Tre by bicycle. Also, I met a few (gasp) Americans and Australians on the trip who made for good company. We spent the night at a nice hotel in Can Tho and had a good time exploring the local market after dinner. The Australian girl (Victoria) and I sampled lots of scary local candy, which turned out to be mostly disappointing, but not, thankfully, sickening.
The next morning we took a boat ride out to the floating market in Can Tho.
We floated around and bought mangoes, pineapples, and other goodies from the boats. Pretty fun. We also went to places where they processed rice and made it into noodles. Doesn't sound terribly exciting I know, but it was a pretty good day.
I've finally posted photos for this on the Flickr page!
