I rolled into Trujillo just after sunrise and checked into a grungy little hostel room in the center of town. Felt fairly well rested after my ride on a luxurious Movil Tours bus. Almost like flying first class: the seats reclined most of the way and they served a crappy little meal.

After breakfast and some exploring around the colorfully painted town, I caught a bus to check out the ruins at the Tschudi complex of Chan Chan. This formerly huge city was the capital of the Chimu Empire between the 12th and 15th centuries. It's quite well-preserved, and was worth the 30 minute hike down a desert road it took to get there from the bus.

Having visited the top sight on my list for the area and discovered that the busses to my next destination only left at night, I decided it wasn't worth sticking around the entire following day and bought a ticket for yet another overnight bus departing that evening. Before leaving I attempted to squeeze in a trip to the Huacas del Sol (largest adobe structure in the Americas) and Luna but got there a few minutes after the site had closed. It doesn't all go smoothly, which is partly the point.

You can find some more photos on flickr.
