after a 2-hour share-taxi ride from battambang to poipet (aka the las vegas of cambodia), a 2-minute walk across the cambodian/thai border, a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride to the aranya prathet train station, a 3-hour wait at the station, and finally, a 5.5 hour train ride, we arrived back in bangkok yesterday evening.
this evening, we hop on the night train to surat thani with rainforests (and leeches), sand and surf in our near future.
in the meantime, i wanted to finally get those damn photos on here. i've got a bunch of old ones from saigon, even. i had to delete lots of old photos (from lao and before) to make room for these new ones :( so i hope you all got to see them way back when.
and in the interest of taking up extra blog entry space, here are a few recurring images from southeast asia:
-long distance buses with cheesy karaoke videos (usually involving heterosexual romance of some sort) being shown on the TV at the front.
-giant cockroaches as big as my middle toe.
-rats scurrying across the alley.
-little gecko lizards crawling around the walls.
-fruit shake and sugarcane juice stands.
-waving kids everywhere, and sometimes waving adults.
-motorbikes and motorbike taxis.
-squat toilets.
-cows or oxen slowly walking across the national highway as the vehicle you're in slows down or swerves around them.
-chickens and roosters roaming the sidewalks of smaller towns.
-the green of rice paddies (especially in vietnam).
-burnt out patches of land in the countryside (slash-and-burn agriculture or for feeding cattle).
-dust, dust and more dust (cambodia and lao).
-temples, temples and more temples.
-monks (mainly young novices) in their saffron robes walking around town, riding the bus, etc.
-young monks practicing their english on you.
