This week is what is known as 'Pre Camp' which is basically the staff training week. We've been doing a few different things, from watching training videos, rather long talks on insurance and risk management to experiencing a 'day in the life of a camper'. That was quite good. We had to go around in our units (age group) and take part in a days worth of actvities. I was teaching the first arts and crafts session, which went pretty well, then I joined up with my unit and we had sessions in riding, performing arts and swimming.
We didn't actaully ride the horses but instead got taught how to help the kids prepare for their riding lessons, so making sure the saddle and reins are correct on the horse, leading it out to the field and how to hoist a kid up onto a horse. Quite interesting really, as all the times I've done pony treking that's all been done for me.
In the evening we did......Line Dancing! Not my favourite activity in the world, it has to be said, but it wasn't too bad. We did it last week too so I remembered a few of the dances. In fact, we have a Hoe Down at least once a session (2 weeks) so I can't really get out of it. May have to head to Walmart and find some appropriate clothing as every gets dressed up for it!
The kids arrive on Sunday and we have moved cabins in preparation. The first two weeks of camp are what they call Specialist camp, which means that the kids are here to concentrate on either riding, tennis or arts and crafts. Apparently we have 12 kids for the first week and 20 for the second, just for arts. After that General camp starts, which means the kids are here for 2 weeks at a time and get to do all the activities. Looking forward to them getting here, though it will be a bit odd as we've had the camp to ourselves for so long!
Another thing I'm looking forward to next week is the first of our official days off! We get at least an hour off a day, and have had more the last two weeks, but we haven't been allowed off camp. Next week we can start going into Winchester, which apparently has quite a few shops, restuarants, a cinema, Walmart etc.
