Amarillo, Tucumcari, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Anthem, done. I knew we were in for a treat driving through New Mexico when the welcome sign said "New Mexico: The Land of Enchantment." Now, I'm not simply making a passing judgment; I’ve been to both Santa Fe and Albuquerque and am well aware of the merits of the latter described by Weird Al Yankovic in his song of the same name. But even after those two trips and driving across literally the entire state, I’m not sure I’d use “enchanting” to describe it. There were some pretty buttes and landscapes, especially where we stopped for gas and the entire face of the plateau was a deep, glowing red. I can’t say the same for the area of Albuquerque we stopped in, though. Mom and I are big Wendy’s fans, so I used my phone to navigate to the closest one off the highway exit, and it guided us to the center of what I’d consider to be a Mexican ghetto. I warned her not to speak Spanish with the employees because I’ve seen her do that before and it usually just catches them off guard, but I came out of the bathroom and she was in conversation with the person at the cash register. Oh well, more entertainment.

I didn’t know Wendy’s food was capable of putting me in a food coma but I think it was that combined with the afternoon sun that made me sleep for an hour and a half or so after lunch – hey, anything to pass the time. I woke up when we stopped for gas, and was almost blown over by the 25-30 mile per hour winds that we experienced since Amarillo in the morning.

The next major event was seeing a New Jersey license plate, because that was the 42nd different state license plate that we had seen since the beginning of the trip. 42 is significant just because a friend bet that we wouldn’t see more than 42 during the trip. Now we actually stand at 44!

We finally crossed into Arizona around 1:15, and we had some fun with some of the highway signs and warnings. Mom saw one that I didn’t actually see (but you’ll figure out what it said) to which she responded, “We have to stay in this lane, because this is the lane for vehicles with livestock.” I’m sure the cats appreciate that classification.

I was a little surprised getting to the house because it wasn't as finished as I expected - we have beds (as in, box springs and mattresses, but no bedroom furniture), a kitchen table, living room furniture, and nothing else. There's no carpet in the bedrooms because the stuff we ordered was backordered and so my parents cancelled the order. My bed was in the dining room because the rooms were being cleaned the next day so they didn't want to make the bedrooms too cluttered.

In any case, it was good to make it there, and I'm excited to spend the rest of the break here!
