Takeshima is a controversial island between Japan and South Korea. But the island I visited was another Takeshima. It is located in Aichi Pref. and a peaceful island in the Mikawa Bay National Park. It is a very small island connected to mainland with a bridge and all covered by the precinct of Yaotomi Shrine. Even though Lonely Planet Japan doesn't mention the island at all, I can recommend it as an attraction near Nagoya. Especially, the view of the bridge from the island was beautiful.

I took a train to Gamagori by way of Shin-Anjo and Nishio on Meitetsu Line, because I had a Meitetsu railway free pass. But if you stay in Nagoya, the quickest way is to get there via Toyohashi. From the station, it took me 15 min walk to reach Takeshima Park. I found an aquarium with yachet Erika which made a voyage round the world, but I didn't enter the aquarium. Beyond the aquarium, the statue of Shunsei Fujiwara and Takeshima Island appeared. The island had a bridge throgh the Torii gate, which is very interesting. I had never been forced to get through a Torii gate so as to enter a shrine! Anyway, Yaotomi shrine was commonplace, but there were a trail around the island and a few picturesque views. The view of the bridge was also good and so I had lunch on the beach nearby. Across the strait, there were Japanese Writers Archive, which was small and boring, but admission free. The view of the Japanese-style room in there was quite beautiful.
