The New Zealand film was produced in Whangara and released in 2002. Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Best Actress of Academy Award at the age of 13 (the youngest actress nominated at that time).
Paihia looked interesting compared to Auckland. Waitangi Treaty Ground was a memorial place not only for me, but also for New Zealanders. I watched a performance of Maoris and saw their large canoe and meeting house. Long time ago, I was impressed by Maori culture showed in the film "Whale Rider", so I was excited at some displays in Waitangi. I also visited Twin Kauri by bike, but it was too far and an offspring of Maori gave me a ride on my way to a pier to take a boat. Even after that, other townies helped me to get to the Kauri. I was so surprised to know New Zealand is a very secure country, because New Zealanders try to pick up even a total stranger. Russell was commercialized as "Romantic Russell", but even after I visited the small town by boat, I didn't know what was romantic. Then I went up to Kerikeri. Kerikeri was a real rural town, but the nature was beautiful especially along a river. I met a few Japanese girls and a hedgehog near the YHA hostel.
