Nagoya attractions were very limited. If you were an international tourist, I recommend Nagoya Castle which is one of the finest castle of Japan, Atsutajingu Shrine which is one of the most important shrine of Japan, and Tokugawa Museum which houses a famous the Scroll of the Tale of Genji. The scroll is open to public during a very short term. (From November 22 to 30, 2008) However, there are no accouting for taste and you may like other attractions. So just for information, or my remider of experiences, I will blog about minor attractions of Nagoya and its suburb. As a matter of course, some of them may be better than major tourist spots as in guidebooks.
Inuyama Castle: It is the oldest castle of Japan and one of the 4 national treasure castles (the other three castles are Himeji, Hikone, and Matsumoto). When I reached the castle at 5:30 P.M. the gate was already closed.
Japan Monkey Centre: It is located in Inuyama Yuen with an amusement park. The world's largest number of primate species gathered at one place.
Pygmy Marmoset: The species is the world smallest. Japan Monkey Center keeps some.
Nankichi Niimi: He is a late Japanese children's book writer. His house was just an old house with an audio explanation. Not so impressive. Niimi Nankichi museum is closely located to the house. If you visit it in late September, it may be an idea to also visit the cluster amaryllis bank of Yakachi River.
Toyokawa Inari Fox Shrine: It is one of the most famous Inari fox shrines. There are a number of fox statues at the fox mound and they were more impressive than the shrine buildings.
Matsushige Lock Gate: It is located in the center of Nagoya, looking like a European building. It was built in 1930 and left unused now.
Noritake Garden: It is close to Nagoya Sta. The park which contains a few interesting museums are admission free except the Craft Center. Hina dolls in the picture below was made of ceramics.
Osu Kannon Temple: The appearnace is gorgeous, but there was nothing to see except the large paper lantern as in my photo.
Centrair (Central Japan International Airport): It was newly openend in Feb, 2005. It houses a lot of restaurants, shops, and gallaries. The Toyota robot plays the trumpet.
Fujimae Mudland: It was a designated wetland under the Ramsar Convention. When I visited, the tide was low as in the picture below.
Tsushima Tenno Festival: It is famous for the lantern boats. Each boats has 365 plus 12 lanterns which means 365 days and 12 months a year. Unfortunately, I couldn't see them.
Takeshima Island: It is located in Gamagori. You can walk on the bridge up to the island through the Torii gate and then on a trail around it. Unexpectedly, the island was very popular.
Tokoname: Central Japan International Airport is situated in the city. The city is famous for pottery and motorboat race. Old part of town still has some pottery kilns with ruined chimneys.
Red Brick Beef Factory Ruin: It is a ruin built in 1898. Kabuto beer which had been brewed in the factory is still produced in Chita Beer in Minamichita, although the number is very limited.
