Part of the reason for this travelogue is to, in addition to provide some I-don't-want-to-work-right-now distraction for my family and friends at their places of business, provide some advice and how-to for other travellers as I certainly read other people's accounts of their journeys while preparing for my own to pick up tips. So this entry is mainly here because I was so stoked that we were actually able to pull this off and I want to pass it on to others that it is possible.
The tricky part of the last leg of our flights to India was that we were flying Air Asia in to BKK and Thai Air out, two airlines with no formal relationship or agreements with each other, and with only a three-hour slot between our supposed arrival from Kota Kinabalu and departure from Bangkok. Given Air Asia's, for all its good points, tendency to fudge the arrival time up to two hours, our bags somehow needing to make it over, and hoping not to leave the international terminal to have to clear customs, security, and pay the annoying departure tax again (collected in Vietnam, Thailand, and Philippines twice, it was at least $10 each time and kind of a grad) to get back in, it was a real juggling act.
Sign us up for Barnum and Bailey's though, because we managed to somehow, through the aid of several transfer and airline desks inside the terminal, apparently unprecedentedly (so they griped but I didn't believe it) walk straightaway to out new gate, arrange our bag extradition and flight out with no fee, end up with an hour to spare, and never even officially enter or leave Thailand. How's that for sly, guy.

Moral of the Story: Yup, we pretty much put Houdini to shame.
