Today we started our challenge of trekking the W-trek through Torres del Paine National Park. A bus picked us up from our hostel and took us 2.5 hours to the entry of the national Park. From here we caught a very well organised shuttle service to our first refugio- Torres Central. We were lucky because for this first day we were able to leave our heavy packs at the refugio while we climbed up to the Base of Torres del Paine, making the day a lot easier. It took us about 3 hours to make it to the lookout as the wind howled. The scenery was amazing! Looking up we could see the over 2000m high towers of rock and behind could see the strange green/blue waters of Lake Torres. At the top we waited for 1.5 hours in the hope that the clouds would clear from the tops of the towers but unfortunately they were never quite completely clear. Michelle maintains that this gave the scene a cool mysterious feel although it would have been nice to see it totally clear. We explored the base of the towers with its green glacier pool below and enjoyed a cup of tea from our new favourite purchase- a thermus. We headed back down to the refugio by 4pm where the wind was still howling. The refugio was very unaccomidating to people not eating their expensive meals and made us cook on our little gas stove out in the cold and wind. It look a long time to boil the water, with Michelle sheilding the flame with her jacket but the bolognes that we eventually had was delicious and well deserved after a big climb. We were in bed, in our dorm, by 9pm but had to comtend with a very tried and loud snorer all night. But at least we were warm. The 5 day adventure had begun!
