So, after nearly locking myself out of my house 1 hour before heading out to the airport to catch my flight, a 10 hr plane ride to Frankfurt, 10 time zones, 12 hour lay-over in Frankfurt, and a 4 hour flight to Tel Aviv, working on 2 hrs of cumulative intermittent 10 minute cat naps - I arrived in Israel this morning at 3:30 AM!
I've just settled in at my mom's cousin's place, Shlomo and his wife Iris and their 11 year old son Leor. It's nice to be spoiled by family after a long journey. They are wonderful.
I'm going to stay her for a night or 2 and check out the Babyloneon museum to get a glimse of my Iraqi roots. Then I'll meet up with my Israeli friend Moria in Be'er Sheva (in the desert!) or her home town of Rechovot, outside of Tel Aviv. It's great having contacts when I first touch ground into a new country.
At the moment I'm still working on adrenaline - it's like dorm duty at Camp Squamish, stay up all night but keep plugging along somehow. I'm excited to be in this new environment where everything is fresh and intriguing. I'm trying to absorb all the Hebrew words around me and hope that they will eventually seep into my brain via osmosis.
I'll post some pictures soon.
