My friend's house was destroyed by the tsunami, as were 167 of the 315 homes in his neighborhood (a suburb of Matara). I could go on for a while regarding what/who was lost in the tsunami... but I'd rather keep this posting more positive!
I was invited over for dinner a little while back and discovered the art of lace making. Women in this particular neighborhood spend hours everyday making beautiful hand-crafted lace. Essentially, threads are transformed into intricately woven strips of decorative fabric. The threads are wrapped around little pieces of wood as to prevent them from getting tangled. When the women are weaving the pieces of wood get tossed around really quickly and the wood pieces hit each other making music reminiscent of a wind chime. It's really something!
Unfortunately though, nobody is buying it. The women of this neighborhood have asked me to help them find buyer for the lace, but I'm a bit stumped... If you have any ideas who would potentially use it, please let me know!
