We'd spent 21 hours on a train before arriving in Dar, taken from Mbeya in the west of Tanzania. That was a good journey, staying in a sleeper carriage with a couple of women - who spent a fair number of the train stops negotiating their shopping. We had a huge sack of rice, two baskets of oranges & two bags of bananas (the small ones which make ours taste like cardboard they're so sweet). But the best one was when the woman who was a PA & was travelling home after a meeting (and I thought the journey back from Manchester was too long!) got a call on her mobile & opened the window to look out before being handed a package for the presidents office... It seemed very mysterious at the time, although it might have just been a fairly convienient way to get something there for the following evening!
