We spent 3 days in Vic Falls which was a bit of an eye opener... The falls were obviously stunning, but seeing the situation in Zimbabwe first hand was scary stuff - especially as Vic Falls is the tourist centre of the country (and in fact pretty much the only place in Zim where tourists still go). But despite the fact that there wasn't a real range of food & other essentials on the shelves (they hadn't had milk available for two weeks & sugar was scarce too), the people were generally amazing - friendly & welcoming.

We had probably my favourite evening meal of my time in Africa here as well when we went to the Victoria Falls Hotel for dinner. Just the very opulent colonial style surroundings, absolutely stunning food (who knows where it came from - other restaurants were blatantly struggling to get good ingredients?!) and amazing service... All in all, most of the things I enjoy ! ...The only downside was that we were limited to Zimbabwean wine, which unlike South African really isn't all that good ! Food included a range of antelope meats like Kudu & Eland as well as croc & amazing beef (not one for the veggies!)... The desert wasn't far behind either, flambed fruits of the forest crepe !

As well as the visit to the falls & the fab meal, I also went white water rafting on the Zambezi with a load of people off the truck... I had tried to forget that an American we met in Okavango had said she didn't go rafting the week before because a German bloke at her hostel had actually died doing it that day... Something I fairly irresponsibly didn't share with other members of the group either (lightening doesn't strike twice eh?). Anyway, it wasn't as scary as I was expecting to begin with, but the fairly aptly named 'Terminator 1, 2 & 3' rapids did their job - I had fell in first while we were trying desperately to paddle away from one of the first huge waves, but while shouting at my boat to come & get me was hit by a huge wave... The guys on my boat said they were on their way over to me when they saw me dwarfed by a huge wave coming up behind me.. Needless to say I was dragged underwater for quite a while without a huge amount of air in my lungs, which certainly got my heart racing!! When I re-emerged & tried to get my bearings, I managed to get myself looking down the rapids which helped - I've never felt so much adrenalin (or felt closer to a heart attack!), to say it was a buzz is a bit of an understatement ! Anyway, people don't need to worry about my sanity though, I'm really not going to become an adrenalin junkie - sadly I feel a bit too old for it...!
