July 9th
We had booked the tour the night before. If ever you go to Kataiya in New Zealand I strongly advise you to take a bus tour along 90 mile beach. For 45$ you get to see the beach, the dunes, cape reanga, eat lunch (which is provided) and the whole ride is made enjoyable by a very a comodating bus driver.
90 mile beach isn't really ninety miles long but 9 kilimiters and very long. Cars arn't allowed to drive along it because it can be dangerous with the tide comming in and espetially if you don't know what dangers to look out for. Sink holes develop along the beach daily and only the people who live along it's shores are permitted to use it as a highway. We got to take pictures of the beach and theres a little island a few klicks off the shore that has a hole in it like the "hole in the rock" in the bay of islands. We also came accross a bearded seal that had crawled up on shore for it's last leg. The beach is used by many fisher man for food. It is rich in shell fish, clams and muscles.
There's a tiny stream that runs from the beach to the heart of the dunes, that i forgot the name of. We folled it for a time before stopping. It has become a favorit pastime of the people to go dune sledding. They use little plastic sleds, like the ones we use in winter...for children ( their tiny! ) to slide down the dunes. The dunes are friken tall, big, well their not like the ones in a real desert, their managable, but their not small by my standards. I slid down the dune twice, it was so much fun.
Then we went out to Cape Reanga wich is a light house up the coast. After there we drove some more untill we came to a little inlet and a beach. We ate lunch on the sandy beach with the waves washing our feet. They supplied us with scones; raisin or cheese, cookies, granola bars, cheese and crackers, rice crackers and hot or cold drinks.
After lunch we passed some kauri tree stumps and stoped ata little convenient store were we got really cheap ice cream "The biggest ice cream cones in the world". Tip top ice cream is famous for being very good and I have to say it is. The portions they gave us for the amount of money we paid were well worth it. We were brought to the Kauri Kingdom which isn't as spectacular as the name dictates. It's a little restaurant with a gift shop that sells kauri made things like furniture and bookmarks.
We got back to Kataiya and ate supper at a little restaurant/ cafe. I had chicken cordan bleu for the first time and it was very nice.
