Where I stayed
Bay Hotel Cape Town
What I did
Cape Town City Centre
by Brian Mullen
We slept in until about noon this morning and enjoyed a nice breakfast at the Bay Hotel. The weather was perfect to tan by the pool all day so we decided to knock out our touring early so we could be back at the hotel in the early afternoon to soak up some rays. As we were waiting to hop on a double-decker sightseeing bus tour, Mindy bartered with a local artist to pick up our first South African souvenir; a painting of African wildlife on canvas.
The red bus arrived and we were on our journey all around Cape Town including City Centre. The shoreline receded just over 50 years ago and over half of the city was underwater, so it's cool to see Strand Street where the trendy places were at one time
“I think I can. I think I can…” These were the words I mumbled to myself when I agreed to ride on the cable car atop Table Mountain. If you recall, I’m not big on heights and this tour destination was all about sitting on rocks thousands of meters above sea level. Table Top mountain is believed to be the oldest mountain; older than the Himalayas. Mindy was fine and dandy leaning over stones and railings for her viewing pleasure. I was practically on all fours crawling around the top of the mountain and was in a hurry to get back down, however, Mindy wanted to “enjoy” a glass of wine on top of the ridiculous rock. I chugged my wine and tapped my heels in hurried anticipation of getting back on the tiny cable car swinging on a piece of string to get us back to sea level. After our return to sea level, I had time to reflect and realized that I actually enjoyed our visit to the top
We reached Camps Bay where our hotel is located to relax poolside and then took a stroll on the white sandy beach during sunset. Shortly thereafter, we enjoyed cocktails at the cigar and wine bar and then treated ourselves to fine seafood dining on the beach.
It was a marvelous day again in Cape Town and a city that I believe everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. Tomorrow we’re off to Gansbaai (two hours away) early in the morning to cage dive with Great White Sharks!! Wish us luck.
