The setting of the sun setting falling behind the mountains and dry landscape as we climbed up to Delphi overlooking the Gulf of Corinth from the slopes of Mt. Parnassos made the five hour wait at deserted Lamia bus station all worthwhile (where it appeared we were the main tourist attraction!).
Our tiny attic apartment at the Hotel Feriades and its stunning bathroom view was a sight to wake up too! We had spent the previous night at a outdoor bar, sipping my best frappe yet while overlooking the lights twinkling around the Gulf of Corinth and then walking through the tiny streets of Delphi perched high up on the mountain.
The next morning we spent walking around Ancient Delphi- which by the 6th BC had become the Sanctuary of Apollo where thousands of pilgrims came to consult the oracle. We walked among the sacred way to the Temple of Apollo where the oracle supposedly sat and then up to the theater and stadium where we were surrounded by cray French tourists running the once athletic track in the 38 degree heat....so of course we became a little crazy and joined them!
We then walked down to the Sanctuary of Athena and to the much photographed Tholos (a 4th century BC columned rotunda of Pentelic marble) where l lied on some ancient rubble beneath a Cyprus tree beside the Tholos and wondered how many people get to experience life like l am this year and experiences like this one!
