The feel of summer is in the air. Everything reminds me of home! The feel of the prickly grass on my feet, the beautiful shady trees with hanging vines, the marina speckled with boats and of course the beautiful ocean. But it is not home, nobody seems to speak a word of English so its reputation as "the friendliest town" in Spain was a bit hard to verify, the shops let alone restaurants and cafes don't open until 1pm which left us stranded walking around starving for hours and once again there is a feel of dirtiness everywhere and you cant drink the water
But sitting on the beach, lying in the sand, putting my feet in the Mediterranean for the first time and walking around in thongs/flip flops all day definitely made-up for anything else.
The view from the top of the Santa Babara Castillo (castle) up the top of the Benacantil Mountain was breathtaking and taking the elevator up the middle of the mountain (4 Euro) to reach it was an experience in itself. We wandered around the castle grounds for a good couple of hours, taking in the views, cactus gardens and historical sights. Learning Yatze on top of a castle overlooking Alicante and the Mediterranean was a challenge as l couldn't concentrate with such a beautiful view in front of me, with the calm blue Mediterranean stretching out beneath us!
Finding out that ice-cream is served with coffee on a little spoon for like 2 Euro was one of the highlights of the day and eating Panella (a rice dished served in a pan originating from Valencia- traditionally served with rabbit or chicken) was a special tasty treat as was having cheesecake ice cream and sampling sweet Alicante wine on the Plaza Mayor watching the world stroll by....it was all just a little too much sweetness for me to handle in one day!
A beautiful day, my cheeks are still glowing from the runs rays and l haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face the whole day and evening train ride to Valencia where we traveled passed the lush fertile plains of Murcia. It was a perfect day in Alicante Spain!
