Maria and l decided we did not have enough money to make another big weekend we decided to sample Lausanne nightlife on a Friday night, and then travel to Montreux by train on Saturday. We knew nothing of Montreux until arriving and were amazed at its beauty. It's on Lake Geneva and it's situated in the middle of the fabulous Swiss mountains. Montreux is called the French Rivera of Switzerland, and rightly so with its beautiful setting, grand hotels and famous Casino.

On arriving from train, Maria and l decided to make the most of the beautiful winters sunny day and walk along a walking path on which we walked to the lovely Chateau De Chillon, a beautiful castle sitting on the edge of Lake Geneva. The setting of the castle was stunning, and on a clear day one can look out from the castle over the lake and across to the Alps.  Lord Byron wrote about this Chateau and you can see where he scratched his name in a pillar. This is the most visited historical site in Switzerland and has been one of my favourite castles to date. Chillon Castle symbolizes the presence of the "Savoyard" in this area. The castle was the princely residence of Pierre, Comte de Savoie (1203 - 1268) . In 1442, Amédéé VIII, who later became pope Felix V, stayed for a certain time with his court there.

We were also in Montreux for its second most famous event (the first being its Jazz festival in July):  Montreux Christmas market! Yes, that right we visited another Christmas market. However after having been to the one in Strasbourg l was a little disappointed with this one despite its beautiful setting beside the lake. So we spent the remainder of the afternoon wandering around, eating lots of goodies and crepes, participating in glass blowing demonstrations (of which l blew my own glass bubble), visiting santas factory and of course ice skating beside the lake and visiting an ice-bar. It was a lovely way to spend a winters sunny day and l look forward to returning to Montreux in the Summer!
