So far so good, no more run ins with the police! At this point I am writing in the country club, having just had a most refeshing swim. Am also watching the men's final at Wimbledon. Gavin is outside sizzling in the sun. I am totally amazed at how we are not dying from heat, so far the temps have been comfortable. BUT WHO KNOWS HOW IT WILL BE WHEN WE HIT THE SAFARI ROUTES. oops! we have enjoyed meeting heathers friends from schhol, many of whom are off to other lands for more adventures. we are more or less caught up with local time now. THE $$ IS STILL A BIT tricky as it is in thousands so i am hesitating at being asked for a 1000 shillings which is only 50 cents, just have to adjust the mind. we have been to hezzy,s,s school. What an amazing facility for the students. Its more like a university campus. These students are fortunate indeed. And to my teaching buddies each classroom has a white board,Did you read that Tony? Now to my Bowser buddies, having travelled the dusty roads here with pot holes the size of craters, we can no longer complain about the route to school! Traffic is wild, very busy and downright dangerous, i don't know how there are not more deaths. But they all seem to take it in their stride. people who live around the complex where Heather lives, certainly live in extremely poor conditions. It is very crowded too. Security is a major concern. All the teachers live in walled complex's as do many other people, barbed wire around the top of the walls and guards at each gate. heather is very security conscious and we have dubbed her apartment fort Knox. The people are very friendly. The children are delightful. when you alk down the street they run out and wave calling us mazoongoo--white man. Yesterday we walked to the bahai temple, along the way the little ones were doing their usual calling, then I heard one mum say there;s Father Christmas, Gavin was highly delighted. NatuarLLLY HE has been called that a few times lately too. I was sad that one tiny boy started crying when he saw us, he was scared and could not have seen white people before, but we waved and he managed a small smile. The poverty here is heart breaking, but thankfully we have not seen signs of hunger, but very poor living conditions. It is wretched really. But evreyone seems happy, as Heather has said, they have music, dancing and Jesus and they live simply and are happy. Tomorrow we are off to jinja, where we will stay at a small lodge for some R& R, I think Hezzy who has just finished her term will be glad of it too. Of course i will have to struggle to lie about, but will endeavour to do so. Gavin too. I should probably get back to the pool side and curb his sightseeing of the bikin's, what a kill joy I am. We are all well. off to the West on Friday where we will see the animals, villages and who knows what other adventures. So all for now, and back for a swim I go. bye and love to all, Anne and Gavin xoxo

Craft shops at Jinja
How fortunate you are to have access to a swimming pool. We too found the heat tolerable at 87 degrees but wouldn't have wanted it any hotter. Perhaps it is not that hot there? Don and I enjoyed our trip to Jinja and learning about the origins of the Nile. There are some good craft shops there, but tend to be high priced; make sure you bargain with them. You can start low, and come up as they come down. It's part of their social-cultural life. Don recommends stopping for the nkoko - fried chicken that they stick inside your window if it is open. Yes, the African people are brilliant at coping with tragedy, but when you get to know them, you can see their sadness- aids, malaria, war, unemployment, no funds for studying...but your cheerful smiles and conversations will be uplifting. Be safe, have fun.

One giraffe please...
Gavin, Anne and Heather, The account of your adventures is so colorful and interesting. The photos are great. I especially love the one of the sunset. What a wonderful, unforgettable experience you three are having! Would you please bring back one of those beautiful giraffes for me? Love, Fran
