We arrived in Koh Tao exhausted after the 26 hour journey.....sleeper train, 2 buses & then 3 hours by boat, at one point, we had to sleep on the floor while between buses for a few hours.....have to say, they are not great at providing information about times & when to get off....we were fast asleep on the first bus when they turned on the lights & yelled everyone for Koh Tao off here ! we stumbled around packing our stuff quickly, KIm half asleep managed to fall down all the stairs when getting off, which everyone ignored !!
We liked Koh Tao, it was great to be out of the city & on a small island....the small hotel was brand new & luxurious compared to recent stays....though without a sea view it was just a short stroll to breakfast on the beach...and we had a jungle view instead.
The island is known as a dive centre, there was so much going on, you could do any course or just a taster for a day....given our limted time, we decided the one day would be a good intro as no classroom stuff, just basic info followed by scuba....we arrived nervous with anticipation but our instructor put us at ease and made it all so simple. The tanks & equipment went on & we could hardly walk, but once in the water no problem.....we didn't realise there were so many buttons & things to deal with ! We had to do the basic once in the water (removing regulator etc.,) but Kim was not keen.....Danny (the instructor) was calm, patient beyond belief & she got through it.....Colin wanted to say, that he had no problem with any of this, but did need extra weights to keep him down there. At last, we were off.....suddenly the fish & coral made it all worth while, what an amazing experience....we surfaced after 45 mins with huge smiles.
Life here is simple, the place has a very laid back vibe....met loads of brits who journeyed here & ended up staying....there were great small bars & places to eat fresh fish right on the beach to watch the sunsets.....loved it. Spent a couple of days doing nothing much, snorkelling & taking a long tail boat to Nangyuang island just off the main place, where there are fantastic beaches....the hardest part was balancing across several boats to reach the pier ! Back to Bangkok again. More thumbnails ...
