After a long day at the airport, arrived early and then had a delay, so 12 hours....aaaaahhhhhhh.....but just one of those things and bound to happen, got to hotel tired, miserable & irratable.
Great location just 2 blocks off the Waikiki beach, could walk around easily.....and CHEAP.
Waikiki beach was crowded but could wander down further and find space. We found Honolulu generally very built up, lots of high rise blocks and concrete....didn't feel at all Polynessian, could have been anywhere in USA apart from the heat.
Only had 3 days, decided to do a couple of tours, the dreaded island tour, which turned out to be mainly on the coach and seemed to last 3 days !! but managed some time in shops of course as mandatory stops....did see some fantastic beaches with surfing competitions going on and great snorkelling.
The tour to Pearl harbour and around the city was half day well spent, busy but quite moving at the memorial.....Kim didn't realise that the memrial was anchored over the wreck of the Arizona warship and you could actually see it through the clear water and still see oil leaking out....they say this is the tears of the 1200 or so men that were killed when the ship was sunk, they stilll lay here, and survivors who die are also allowed to have thier ashes entombed here as well.
Ended up with an evening at the Luau, saw some great dancing and a taste of the island culture and of course some obligatory tourist Hula dancing !! not pretty..was really well done and got to meet loads of people from around the world......cheered on Big Daddy from Atlanta,Georgia as he Hulard the night away and won the first prize.....we hid at the back with the other Brits !! Food was traditionally cooked underground, great sunset.
Now off island hopping.........watch this space
