Up very early to catch the ferry from Bella Coola to Port Hardy, left Bella Coola and drove to the dock, as we parked up saw a sign saying check in at the shop in Bella Coola....so back we go and wait around a lot...then back to the dock, wait around a lot and finally get on a small ferry (last one of the year)....great start, beautiful cruise of 13 hours through the inland straits.
There were glaciers, hump back whales and we even saw a pod of dolphins, along with seals sunning themselves on the rocks.....not bad we thought sipping a cup of tea (a lot cheaper than going on one of the whale watching ships).
Very smooth for most of the journey, until you hit the open water, time to take a tablet and for Kim to get horizontal...which seemed to do the job
Now you don't expect food on board a ferry to be great, but disgusting ? !! could be better....come on BC ferries.
Docked late and dreamed of breakfast...stayed in B&B as everywhere was full.
Stayed of a couple of days in Port McNeil, visiting Telegraph cove where we went last time we came, and really enjoyed the Whale imterpritive centre....they had a full size skeleton of a Fin whale...huge or what !! it was snagged on a cruise ship and died.
Took a short ferry journey across to Alert bay and stayed in a lodge overlooking Johnston strait....really quiet and relaxing, with half the island being a reserve for First Nations....amazing totems everywhere, with great cultural centre full of traditional masks used for the potlatch that had been confiscated by the goverment for 50 years !! finally got them back... live music there, gave amazing atmosphere.
There were two places to eat on the whole island, Bills the cafe stuck in the 1950's none of the furnishings had changed including the decor and bright blue wooden benches...but did a great bacon sandwich if you ask for one.
There were 5 klms of roads...better off walking. No mammals on the island, so Colin felt safe for the first time in months !!
