Finished off this part of the trip with a visit to Zion NP (which means place of serenity) we did several hikes, Colin while posing for a photo behind a waterfall, managed to drop his Leke walking stick over the edge into the canyon.....didn't fall too far (about 30') a couple of young amercan lads bounded over and said " do you want me to get your stick for you sir"  ........Colin with his pride badly dented said "nope" I'm not that old he muttered as he clambered down, slipping & sliding while Kim couldn't look and of course the French tourists took photos !! but came back victorious....

Then on to Vegas, which is devoid of any sort of peace or serenity......found a great cheap motel just off the strip near MGM grand, using the monorail to get around we explored the huge hotels. We were visiting at same time as the Star Trek convention was in town, they are weirdos.....and a lot of Brits !! but we had to take part, so ended up on the rides being beamed up and fighting Clingons & the Borg (several times as tickets lasted all day).....had a guy banging on the door at 4am in morning, decided not to open it and called for support....was it a burglar ? rapist ? murderer ? NO just a drunk who was in the wrong hotel block..

Shows were great, went to the "Comedy stop at the Trop" only $30 for us both as we had a voucher.....bargain....and then went to see "LOVE" the Cirque de Soleil show at the Mirage which is based on the Beatles music, amazing...but blew the budget.
Summary of Vegas:   Overcrowded, overpriced, over rated....SIN CAPITAL of the World.

Summary of USA

We loved:
Cheap fuel.....$3 a gallon
Free refills....soda & coffee
Walmart......has everything, mended Colins broken glasses
National Parks.....Visited 30 in 11 states, parks pass was great value, saved hundreds.
Scenic cars & fabulous views
Non branded, great service
New friends......Amercans we met offered us help, a place to stay & sent us photos.
Montana....emptiest, friendliest state of all much to see & easy to get around

We hated:
Interstates.....too busy
Fast food......too many, too big, no variety, too many burgers....BORING
No private conversations.....get a map out & wait for the crowd to give advice.
Drive throughs......Banks, dry cleaners, fast food.....get out of the car & walk, good for you.
Over Zealous Patriotism......or is it Nationalism, anyway, seemed unhealthy to us.
Las Vegas.....All too much, think of the planet !! (we are doing carbon offset for our trip)

Overall, we had a great time, an amazing country, so big...we found this out when reading the map, as an inch took hours to drive, seemed like we were not getting anywhere !!
Thanks to everyone who sent us emails, we enjoyed reading them they made our day & we will reply soon.

Back from East Africa
We've just returned from Kenya - big game hunting with cameras and bins!! Spotted 3 of the big 5 but the elusive leopard and the rhino kept well hidden. We spent 5 days relaxing in Mombasa whilst Beth tried out every water-sport and Dave tried out every drink!!

I agree with you that the National Park tickets are excellent value in the States. Beth took part in the Junior Ranger programmes which were so well run and motivating - much better than any education which takes place in the classroom!! Dave and I learned a lot too as we tagged along behind.

I can remember when we arrived in Vegas being shell shocked after the peace and beauty of places like Zion, Lake Powell etc but we soon got into the eating in The Mirage - any style of cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner and amazing quality. I'm glad we went once but wouldn't want to repeat it!

Take care, we're now planning our next year's big hol - perhaps S. America - inspired by your travels. We're off to Portugal in October hoping for our last bit of sun before the onset of the winter. I trust you will be wintering somewhere warm and sunny?!

Love from Karen
