Spent the whole week travelling through amazing scenery as we worked our way back down through Montana, getting lost on a regular basis which was great....! taking every scenic byway we could find....saw deer, antelope, a dozen golden eagles, Cranes & Curlews, and a skunk.
We stayed at Deer Lodge where our fire building skills were improving with Colin moving on to 2 fires, the young bucks next door couldn't light theirs so poured petrol on it and set their trousers alight....much to the amusement of the rest of the group.
Went to visit the first state prison in Montana and relics of the old west before moving on to visit the Ghost town of Coolidge, a long hike with Colin ringing the bear bell like a madman, and it was just houses falling down !! but we got back safely.
Went to a rodeo in Dillon, oldest cowboy was 70 riding a steer !! (impressive) but the bulls won 3-0 on the day.
We crossed the border back into Idaho (not for the last time) onto Pocatello, where we travelled 100 miles each way to visit "Craters of the Moon" National monument, 100 sq miles of volcanic rock formations in the middle of nowhere, we climbed up a cinder cone (hill of ash) and into a spatter cone (snow inside when 85 degrees outside), Lava tubes stretching miles & spectacular views of the Oregon trail.
Started heading across towards the Colorado border to Dinasaur National Park, fossils galore and Dinasaur bones, trekking through 100 degree heat to see them still in the rocks, hiking upwards to the wall where there are 100's of bones, and it was closed due to earthquake damage (pissed off or what).
Moved on to Steamboat springs in Colorado, where the world & his wife were tubing down the river, drinking beer & playing frisby, looked like a lot of fun but no time to stop...as going up on gondola to top of mountain, anyway, it was too hot, bit cooler up top as 90 degrees down below.
We couldn't get a room as we travelled through several small towns, due to price or unfit for human habitation, so ended up staying in a one horse town of Granby, in the back of what looked like a run down old shack, but was in fact a german run restaurant, the only place to eat in town, but there was a free firework display....
Getting excited as we head towards Denver to pick up Kims Mum & Dad (better known as the outlaws) who are joining us for 3 weeks, should do well in the west !!.
