Vang Vien is a small town, with basically just two dusty streets, and lost of construction going on, I think putting sewers in. The place has as many tourists as locals, and is a notorious party town, although sometimes a little partying can be a bit of fun. I imagine in 5 or 10 years time, this place is going to be a resort. The town sits on a river, with stunning mountain back drops to it. The first day we simply lay by the river on a bamboo veranda, and watched the kids paddling and playing in the stream to this amazing backdrop

. That night, we definitely both had to much to drink, and made lots of new friends, as well as meeting lots of old ones from previous travels. when I wake up in the morning, Kate is not next to me, we're meant to be kayaking, so I go down there, she's not there, back to the bar we were at, little bit of shouting, back to my hotel, talking to them about calling the police, and I here a muffled voice, "Danny where are you". Turns out that after I had gone to sleep, she decided to get some air, and then returned to and empty room (1 doors up) and slept soundly all night. Thought I was going to have a heart attack at the time. This is the time for an e-mail about sensible drinking Miss Mcshea.Anyway the town here as a couple of bars that play Friends and Simpson's all day, which although definitely sad, is a good way to kill a hangover, and is also much more enjoyable when you haven't see them for 5 months. That night, there is a big killer pool competition in a bar near by where we stayed, and I won first time and won two crates of beer, killing my sober wishes (gave away pretty much all of them away).
So an early start, and we take a trip to a couple of caves, one which you tube (Rubber ring) into, and was used as a shelter previously in times of bombings
02. Kids playing in freezing river
. After a little lunch, where Kate got very wound up by a monkey on a chain, we then kayaked down the river. Lots of splashing (Kate is the self confessed worst splasher in the world), and a few small rapids, which our Korean fellow kayakers managed to capsize it 4 times. About half way down the river, you come in to tubing country, which is where loads of ferrang sit on a rubber ring all day, stopping in bars and drinking beer lao, and doing shots (normally free) of lao lao (nasty rice wine), and jump off swings and bridges. Touristy, but fun. We stop at one of the main bars, which has an incredibly high swing, and as the beer flows people get more and more carried away. Back flips, bombs, two at a time, swinging from your feet, or just a good old fashioned belly flop. Danny and Kate got involved! You can also play volleyball or hackysack, and to be honest have just as much fun watching other people swinging and falling with style. Safety wise, I'm sure its not good, and a guy who dived off the platform, hit his head on a rock, and was lucky to only have a couple of stitches.the following days, have been a continuation of debauchery, two days of tubing (or hitching rides with fast boats, so I don't have to splash, nights of pool, riverside bars, films, or spending 2 and half hours looking for our guesthouse in the pitch black, and actually knocking on someone's door at 3 in the morning. great fun, but 5 days and your done, or is it 6?
