With nearly everyone that I met along my trip telling me of their favorite places in Central America, nearly all in Guatemala, I skipped the Corn Islands in Nicaragua and headed north. Idyllic beaches are nice, but after a few they tend to run together.
Antigua is definitely not the representative sample of the whole of Guatemala, but it is a beautiful city full of great buildings and cobblestone streets. Between walking around the city in the morning and climbing Volcan Pacaya in the afternoon I took half the number of pictures of any other country I visited in just one day.
The volcano was amazing with molten red lava flowing over cooled volcanic rock. With careful stepping and trusty boots it was possible to edge right up to the lava for a good poking with the walking stick.
