Was able finally to succeed in going against protocol and just push my assembled bicycle off as I exited the ship in Hamburg. In reality this proved more complicated than expected and resulted in many attempts to gain approvals from management. They never really approved due to the fact that customs requires all luggage to be routed separately. All I can say is that I got from A to B and finally to C, free of the red tape and standing on the shore with all my belongings. The customs agent even wished me a pleasant journey and assessed no import fee.

Getting to the Train Station proved fairly easy as traffic was still light, so cycling the city streets (no bike paths) was not too problematic. The station was only a couple of kilometers in distance and in the station I found a post office, so was able to ship my backpack with cruise articles on ahead. This was a relief as the bike was now down to just the necessities of the bike trip.

By 2:20 PM I am sitting in a train compartment with the bike in it's reserved storage position at the end of the car.. Four hours later I alighted in Marburg to be greeted by the awaiting Hannelore and Reinhard. We put the bike on his car carrier and drove to our first night's reserved hotel and had a very pleasant dinner and evening together.

This morning I am preparing to do my first day on the trail and jotting this note as my memory is fresh. I will not be able to post another update to my blog as easily as on shipboard due to first, time constraints and second, my computer's balkiness in setting up wireless connections. It desperately needs an overhaul but right now there is just no time. Last night I could not even get it to boot up till I finally just gave it a good physical jolt. Obviously it is on it's last legs. Or is is the operator? Humm. No need to answer that. I probably would not like the answer. Anyhow, it's time to hit save and concentrate on the morning's preparations. This is now the beginning of phase two of the adventure. No more lollygaggling. Gotta keep moving.
