Flag of Portugal  , Azores,
Friday, May 7, 2010

We are about 400 nautical miles from the Azores now and due to dock in Lisbon shortly around 1 PM tomorrow, Saturday, May 8th. I have made an effort to try to photograph a picturesque sunrise or sunset and have come to realize they aren't all that common. After several days of failures all I have to show for my morning and evening trips to bow or stern is a signature shot of my feet framing a very non-spectacular setting obscured by clouds and with very little color...but that is proof that the more colorful versions are just not to be had on a whim. I will keep trying. Maybe with luck, before the trip ends, the weather will provide a more perfect setting. In the meantime my feet are the only feat a'showing at last night's sunset no-show. The weather is mucky and a bit too cool to enjoy being topsides. Likewise, this morning while climbing the Matterhorn on that torturous machine in the Gym, the sun rose without the slightest notice, obscured completely by a dense fog.
The news reports we are receiving indicate that the Greek financial crisis is having a harmful effect on the value of the Euro, not to mention markets all over the world. One Euro was quoted today at about $1.29, considerably cheaper than on my previous visit to Europe last September when I recall paying around $1.47 for one. I'm not sure what effect this has on Europeans if they don't need to buy foreign currencies, but Greece's troubles certainly benefit me when I exchange dollars for Euros. It's a good example of the old maxum that "one man's troubles are another man's good fortune." Sorry Archemedes, Aristotle and Papendreau, you were all Greek, werem't you? I'll drink to you, Greek or not, and wish you better days to come. And if you don't get the Euro up soon, take heart, there will be a lot more buyers available for those high-end Mercedes-Benz's, not including myself however.
