We have made better time than planned and are due to arrive in Ponte Delgada, The Azores, 14 hours early, so instead of arriving tomorrow morning, May 6th, we actually dock around 7PM tonight. Departure is scheduled for 5 PM tomorrow, so hopefully there will be continued good weather and opportunities to explore the area in more depth.
Everyone seems to remember where they were when President Kennedy was assasinated. I was in the Azores, having just flown in from Bermuda with an Air Force inspection team. I also remember well the Rose' Mateuse wine the air crews flying the line out of Dover AFB used to bring back from Lajes Field by the case. I always had a standing order in for Portuguese wine as my next door neighbor was flying scheduled C-133s to Europe, and Lajes was a refueling stop. Perhaps I can renew my acquaintance with this semi-sweet rose' while in town; not in conjunction with bicycling, mind you. If all goes well, Richard (my Brit table mate) and I may have to check out the wine if we are permitted to debark in the evening.
Tonight was Arab theme in the dining room. Falafel, baked fish, cous-cous, and the like. Nothing to rave about in my opinion, but there were alternate choices for those with little daring to try new dishes. I passed on the evening's entertainment and waited to catch the sunset that I thought would be a good photo op, but it bombed. Oh well, more opportunities will present. Also just missed a wonderful rainbow that was partially visible through a window while eating dinner. There have been a few squalls but no rough seas so far. Usually the squalls have been off at a distance...none really up close to drench us. Still a bit cool for bathing suits but the determined do find a way to get in their sun worshiping.
