May 4th and two more days until we make the Azores on the sixth at 9 AM. I awoke without an alarm at 5:30 this morning, grabbed a quick coffee an headed for the gym. I was 40 minutes into the cycling and treadmill routine when right before my eyes this gigantic flaming orange sun peeked over the horizon, at first like the tip of a match head. Then slowly it ascended out of the sea revealing a sight I've rarely witnessed. A gigantic magnified ball of fire that leaves the impression that the ocean must be hissing steam from where it emerged. And the view of the sea from my position at the glassed-in gym was a full 180 degrees; the earth's curvature fully visible. I will return tomorrow with my camera and hope to record this glorious event that occurs somewhere every second but is infrequently observed from such an unobstructed lookout point.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the morning was overcast, and out on deck the wind was decidedly too chilly to enjoy lounging about in swim wear. It turned out to be a great morning for reading in a quiet lounge. The seas have remained calm the entire trip...not at all like my previous ship crossing of the atlantic in the winter of 1952. That trip was unforgetable in it's roughness, with high waves breaking over the main deck of, what at that time was the largest cargo ship afloat...the Old Dominion Mariner.

The sun finally broke through after lunch and the sun worshipers gathered in great numbers to add to their ever darkening tans. I found my favorite perch at the stern, well protected from the wind and did what comes naturally....napped. So goes another exciting day at sea.
