Where I stayed
Sheraton Inn - Reading
Readers of my other travelogues know that one of my frequent travel companions is my friend, Tom Marihart. Tom has proven over time to be a great friend and a very adaptive traveler. So, it was a natural reaction that Tom came to mind when the urge to go on another trip started taking over my brain. Tom, however, had other issues going on in his life.
After we got back from our trip to Canada in 1999, Tom decided it was time to get another job. He had been at his (then) current job for three years – a sin in the topsy-turvy employment market of Silicon Valley. His search for employment ended up taking him to Lucent Technologies’ plant in Reading, Pennsylvania. After some brief negotiations, he accepted a marketing position with Lucent. I initially thought this was the nail in the coffin for any travel that we’d do in 2000. However, Tom mentioned he could use some help finding a place to live. Since I had never been to Pennsylvania, it seemed like great excuse to help a friend, see something I hadn’t seen before, and satiate the travel bug. With the excuse in place, it was easy to get the plane tickets and make the trip a reality.
On October 8, Tom and I boarded a plane at San Francisco International bound for St. Louis, where we'd pick up our flight to Philadelphia. Our flight out of San Francisco was 40 minutes late, which did not help my nerves for flying. The delay was compounded in St. Louis, where we were 90 minutes late departing for Philadelphia. The delays made me a basket case. But, fortunately, the flights were uneventful. However, the late departures meant that we didn't arrive into Philadelphia until 11:15 p.m. Tom then told me that we had about a hour's drive ahead of us to get to Reading.
We rented a car from Avis at the Philadelphia Airport and set out for Reading. Tom did the driving, as I was beat from the trip. With Tom at the wheel, I can be assured of a fast, but safe, trip. And, that's exactly what our drive to Reading turned out to be.
We checked in to the Sheraton Inn in the Reading suburb of Wyomissing. The room was clean, but nothing special. Still, it was great to climb into bed after a long day of traveling. I went to sleep looking forward to seeing the sights around southeastern Pennsylvania.
