Hello from the North Pole!
Actually, about 350 miles from the North Pole. We never have been this close to the North Pole before. My previously flights to Asia have been along the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. But they were to Japan or Hong Kong. Japan is further east and HK is further south so the Great Circle route did not take us this far north. Also I think Russia had a lot of closed air space. Remember Korea Airlines flight 007? Over 18 hours to China, including a 14+ hours nonstop flight! Today was an early morning. AA's policy is you must be checked-in an hour before domestic flights and two hours before international flights. We are considered international even when our first leg is to Chicago. We got burned before when we were 3 minutes late to the counter for our last AA trip. They would not give us boarding passes. Our flight was almost an hour away but they insisted on rebooking us on a later flight. We lost a half day! We would lose a whole day if we were late for today's flight. We had to be checked-in by 6:05 AM, so arrived at the airport around 5:30 AM!
No food between BOS/ORD so Mimi packed breakfast. We eat some during the 2 hours between check-in and flight departure. We eat the rest on the flights Everything is going well. Mimi has a blowup pillow and a window seat so she's happy. Her farther has an aisle seat and will be visiting family and friends after being away for 5 years so he's happy. I have an aisle seat and a power port for my new sub convertible PC (tablet / laptop PC) so I'm happy. No problems with the Chicago connection. We used Mimi's father as an excuse for early boarding. This flight is scheduled to have lunch and a snack. Dinner is later, before we arrive in China. Liquor is not free on this flight as it was during our trip to Greece last September.
This flight (ORD/PVG) is over 14 hours! This is the second longest nonstop AA flight. The longest is Chicago/New Delhi. We are scheduled to arrive in China around 2:30 PM but they now say after 3:00 PM, which will make it close to 15 hours nonstop. We plan not to go to bed until evening local time so I better get some sleep. See you in China. I'll post pictures later. You should all get notification when I do.
