My sincerest apologies for taking so long with this post, but as many of you know, the Peace Corps Mauritania program has been suspended for security reasons. Over the past year, there have been a number of events, mainly in Nouakchott (the capital), that have raised question as to the safety of foreigners living and working in Mauritania. About two weeks ago, Peace Corps Washington sent a security assessment team into Mauritania while we were in Senegal completing our mid-service training conference. Unfortunately, their findings concluded it would be best to remove all PCVs from Mauritania and suspend the program until several of these security issues have been resolved.
I want you all to know that I have never personally felt threatened or unsafe in Mauritania and that many of us are really upset about this decision. It is, however, the right choice, and we are all comforted by the fact that all of the in-country staff will keep their positions and begin to prepare for the next round of PCVs, whenever that may be. I am, however, going to miss Awainatt Zbill and everything I have worked to build there.
Peace Corps sent an excellent transition team to Dakar to help us through all of this, including Acting Director of Peace Corps Jody Olsen. Some of us are transferring to other counties to finish our service, others are re-enrolling for another 27 months, and the rest of us are closing our service and moving on.
I have just signed the last of my paperwork, cashed in my plan ticket and am on my way to Morocco. All things considered, I have had an incredible experience with Peace Corps and with Mauritania and would not trade any of it for anything. I am, however, ready to get back to the USA and start working.
I am going to be traveling around for a bit and may not have great access to email, but if anyone has any questions, just send me a message. I will get back to you when I am back in the States and not filling out job applications…..
