5 days in Hue
Entry 43 of 61 | show all | print this entry |
Tropical storm season, dark and rainy throughout central Vietnam. Five days of miserable weather, but no matter. Hue is the ancient capital of Vietnam, the official seat of the Nguyen dynasty government from 1802 and 1945, until Uncle Ho forced the abdication of the final emperor. We visited the old citadel, the flag tower (highest in the country), imperial enclosure and the ruins of the purple forbidden city. In 1968, Hue was taken by the VC and North forces in the Tet offensive and held for 25 days before the Americans and ARVN reclaimed the city in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Dylan even made it out to the royal tombs for a visit, and to Thien Mu pagoda. Most of the time, however, was spent eating great food in various cafes throughout the city and watching HBO. Hoping that the rain will subside as we head further south to the beaches.
