The days are blending in with each other and its getting harder to keep track of all the things we are doing. We're in Sydney now. Just arrived this morning...and we are staying at the YHA on Bondi Beach. We've spent the whole afternoon walking around Sydney and checking out the place (The Opera House, Hyde Park, The Aquarium...) We returned our trusted rental car today and it feels good to get rid of some responsibility...now we are really travelling...beat style. Well, not exactly...Dylan and Jeff and I booked pretty good seats for an Opera at the Sydney Opera House for Wednesday...we are going to see a four hour performance of Julias Caesar set to the music of Handel - hardley something backpackers would do (the ticket prices were pretty high but we just figured it would be crazy not to go).
Now to recap...before we arrived in Sydney today, we managed to make a few key stops on the way down the highway...we paddled out for a bit in Newcastle at Bar Beach and again at Shelly Beach on the central coast...the waves were kinda brutal but hey...good to be out - especially since it was 40 degrees outside...the heat was unbearable. We went to Manly to see a friend of Dylan's from Ottawa and went out ont he town drinking... ended up sleeping outside in the grass in the backyard of her house...woke up and headed north out of Manly to grab a hostel in Collaroy and catch up on missed sleep, had a Turkish dinner and cleaned up the rental car...that was yesterday. So I guess we're caught up in a sense. All except for the Sydney Aquarium! Truely amazing! They have an underwater tunnel where you just stand and watch sharks swim over and beside you for hours...reef sharks and grey nurse sharks and leopard sharks...unreal! There is nothing in the world that compares to watching these predators move through the water. Well worth the $19 admission. And now I have about 1 hour of video footage of various species of sharks swimming. We tried to throw Jeff in the shark pool but ultimately failed.
Anyhow, I'll keep you all posted and let you know how Julius Caesar goes..oh and the waves a Bondi...a pretty good swell got here today and it looks big, dark, and messy out there. Not to mention the 2 great whites that showed up a few weeks ago here only to get chased out to sea by some lifeguards on sea doos.
Cheers.
