Today we drove the 200 miles from Wellington to Napier, first up the west coast and then crossing over to the east coast. The drive across the north island meandered through parched fields and dry river beds resulting from a major drought in New Zealand. Wellington only has 20 days of water remaining so are starting major restrictions.

We arrived in Napier and spent an hour trying to find our hotel as Napier is bigger than I anticipated. Napier is a very pretty resort town on the east coast of the North Island. It was destroyed by an earthquake in the 20' s and then rebuilt in Art Deco style which remains today.

We had an excellent dinner and then walked the beach. Tomorrow we are off to Rotorua before our final stop in Auckland.
