After the wine tasting in Napa we arrived at our hostel literally in the middle of a National Park surrounded by wild country to find ourselves separated into his and hers dorms! Calling them dorms is a bit nice... they were more like a human version of battery hen cages with 12 beds crammed into small rooms! They were crowded, the beds squeaked, were uncomfortable and both of us had to endure incessant snoring. Needless to say neither of us got a good night's sleep.
Before we went to bed though we thought about enjoying a bottle of wine! Given alcohol was banned on the hostel premises, we decided to drive round to the Point Reyes lighthouse to watch the sunset and enjoy the wine and a light dinner. In theory it sounded excellent... in practice it wasn't quite so. It was cold and very, very windy and it was difficult seeing us staying for the sunset after racing there to beat the sun! But we somehow managed to arrive on a night when they had a tour of the lighthouse workings, and despite not being allowed on the tour, we were encouraged by the National Parks girl to stick around and watch the show. Judging by her enthusiasm and the crowd of people on the tour we figured it was worth the so called half hour wait... boy were we wrong! After an hour waiting in the cold with another couple from Europe a piddly little light came on, then the tour started to return. It felt like we were the butt of a cruel joke... no promised dazzling beams of light across the water... no spectacle... very underwhelming! We had a bit of a laugh on the way back to the car but it was a disappointing way to spend a Saturday night!
Needless to say we were glad to leave Point Reyes and continue our journey up the coast.
