Hello everyone. We have been traveling now in Australia for two weeks. We spent a wonderful week in the outback seeing Uluru (Ayers Rock) Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta. It was all hiking and camping and sleeping in swags ( yes we are officially now jolly swagmen).

Our days have been filled with sitings of yellow crested cockatoos, pink and gray parrots known as Gallaws and rainbow lorikeets. Kookaburras and the synthesizer like sounds of Australian magpies get us out of our tent with a chorus each morning of birds sounds like we never hear in America.

We have headed for the south coast and Coorong National park. This desolate area is formed by sand dunes on the coast that create a vast inland brackish water lagoon filled with bird life and massive fish We turn the bike into a tanker

. Fortunately the weather turned cooler, but a little too cool and brought heavy duty headwinds. Our ride through the Coorong was slow but we saw many kangaroos, emus and weird reptiles. The flies are just a torment here. They constantly buzz around you while riding with hundreds of them on your back and as many flying up your nose and into your eyes and ears. We had to camp at a primitive site in the coorong with one picnic table only, that was covered with bird shit, endless flies and grass so thorny you could not sit on it. Miserable experience on the one hand, but tons of wildlife on the other and a beautiful walk through the bush and across dry salt lake beds to the sea.

After six straight days, including about 80 miles yesterday into a headwind we have arrived at Robe. It is a beautiful place on the sea. We are staying in a cabin and taking a day off from the flies and cycling.

Until we find another computer G'day mates.

Jealous!
Hey there good friends -- we are so jealous of your adventure (except of course the flies -- I HATE FLIES!) -- and still wish we were with you. When I read the part to Stan about the chain, his comment was 'Yikes -- isn't Adelaide a big city?'

Here in southern California, even though it's mid-November, the weather keeps getting these hot spells (yesterday near 100 degrees) and high winds, causing massive fires!

We are still riding high, and pinching ourselves, over the election. This Obama Mamma is ecstatic!

Good writing, Mike -- keep it up. Miss you lots

very cool
I guess you might like to be cool at some of the stages of this trip!

I have never heard of the underground city that you mention. It sounds very strange, almost out of this world strange. The wine country must have been nice, I'm sure you must have stopped along the way for tastings.

How is the world-wide economy slow down impacting you, if at all? The dollar seems to be improving vs. other currencies is that helping?

What a great adventure, we will be anxious to share your photos, keep us posted!

Living vicariously
What a fabulous experience, though I am hard pressed to imagine that reptile sightings are a good thing.
