This morning we drove back into the town and then off to one side to get to the little village of Barichara. In the guide book it is listed as a Hollywood filmmakers dream town. It is a Spanish Colonial town that looks the same today as it did when it was first built 300 years ago. The streets are paved with huge stone blocks, each about 2 ft square, and all of the buildings are whitewashed stone or adobe. The one exception is the huge 18th Century sandstone Cathedral. As advertised it was certainly very picturesque, as well as walking round the streets we also went to a viewpoint at the edge of the town which gave great views looking over the valley towards the mountains in the distance. After the walk we then had to return to San Gil to continue on towards the town of San Juan Giron, another town with an original Colonial centre. When we got there we had a look for somewhere to park and very quickly decided to stop by a police post and ask them. The officer there decided he would call in a couple of motorbikes and check with them. After almost an hour they all decided something, we are still not really sure what, but one of the motorbikes drivers told us to follow him. After a while he told us to park next to the road and then Mike went with them to the main Police station. There were a couple that spoke a smattering of English and it was explained what we wanted. Once again Mike went for a walk, this time next door into a large parquedero which suited us fine
(N7.04.11.50 W73.10.06.54). The street between the park and the police is in fact the first street of the historic centre so we could not be any closer if we tried.
