Drove to the town of La Villa de Los Santos, which is where the first Panamanian Declaration of Independence from Spain was made on November 10 1821. The normally very quiet town comes alive on this day to honour the "Cry for Freedom" We got there about 11 am and the parade was due to start about 12. We were able to find a place to stand under one of the shades that someone had erected and settled down to watch. The parade, as is normal, started with the band of the Fire service of the town, apparently they played a big part in the signing. These were followed by several other fire service bands and then the police bands. The police bands and marching units were quite hard to distinguish at times and we had to ask if they were police or soldiers. They were all police in fact. Next along came the senior politicians of the town along with some women wearing the Pollera dresses. These dresses on the whole are antique dresses that have been hand stitched and are very spectacular. Following on from these were the different schools. These again were a mix of extravagant bands and cheerleaders as well as just some people from the school with a flag. We stayed for almost 3 hours watching the parade, but then decided to go back, even though there were still lots of different groups still waiting to start marching.
11th- A bit of a lazy day catching up with some chores as well as lazying around the pool.
