We drove from one side of Arkansas to the other, where we found ourselves with an opportunity to cross another state off our list of states we've visited. Mississippi stood right across the border, so we booked a hotel there to spend the night before our Arkansas school in the morning.

We expected to cross the Mississippi River to get there. We even expected it to be flooded, as we've heard. We did not expect the extent to which the river flooded.

I've attached some pictures, but none of them quite expresses the vastness of the flooding. The building in the water you will see is the Isle of Capri casino. It has shut down for obvious reasons. Now, the only traffic in and around the casino consists of fishermen trying to score their catches in what used to be the parking lot. We learned that dozens of snakes have taken up residence in the halls and laid eggs in their new habitat. A full river current now flows around the entire casino, and for almost a mile on either side of it.

Our contact person at the school told us that she went to take her 5-year-old son out to see the flooded river. "Look, buddy! I want you to see how big the river is. I've never seen it this big in my entire life!" Her boy matched her awe and said, "Yeah--me either!"
