Well, this day was originally supposed to be our last day of tour. We had great plans--we would work our way back to California via a northern Texas route which would encompass one last stay with Aunt Diana, Albuquerque, and finally to the Grand Canyon to cap off our year's tour. But then we got news that a school had been added in Donna, TX, in the very south-most tip of Texas. The Grand Canyon would not be possible. But we planned to make the best of it by spending the weekend in South Padre Island. But then we got more news that said Donna, TX cancelled. So.. no South Padre Island, but we could resume our previously determined plan.

Here in Spring, TX, for our last day, we did business as usual and found ourselves setting up in the gymnasium. Since it was our last day, we decided to time ourselves setting up. You see, in training, we had to complete an entire set-up in 45-minutes. We made it back then, but without any time to spare, and we were sprinting and out of breath. We knew we've improved since then, but we wanted some stats.

About twenty minutes into our set-up, the power went out!  So we continued what we could in the dark, then stopped the clock. We couldn't set up our audio/video equipment without power.
We waited quite a while, and announcements came over the PA system saying our assembly would still go on, but they'd have to adjust the schedule. Finally, the power did come back on. We took advantage of the time and set up the rest of our equipment, reading to continue as scheduled. But not ten minutes later, the power shut off again, taking the power to our running projectors with it. No serious consequences. Then it came back on again shortly thereafter, and we finished our set-up in about 30 minutes total. Yay us!
But then we waited. And waited. No word from anyone. And we were hungry. There was a staff member grilling outside, though. The seductive wafting of grilled burgers and dogs tickled our noses and drew us to ask the lady if we could perhaps have something to eat?
Our question resulted in a more favorable outcome than expected. "Oh sure! Go right on in and grab what you want!" Right through the door, in the teacher's lounge, was a spread of every kind of picnic food you could imagine. Potato salads, pasta salads, green salads, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, salsa, dip, vegetables... a veritable summer feast! We filled our plates and brought back visibly huge smiles back to our gymnasium. It didn't matter how much longer we'd have to wait, now!

We did wait, though. It was over an hour beyond when we were scheduled to start the video in the first place. Some assistant from the office came to us and told us that the show would go on. But we soon got a call from our boss that said otherwise. Our boss told us that the principal called him and asked him to reschedule. So, we finished our lunch, and started to tear down our set again. What a silly day! We came, we rushed to set up, the power went out, we waited for hours, we ate lunch, and we left! And the silliest thing is that we would have to do it all again on Monday... Yep, the school rescheduled for Monday.
That meant we had a bonus weekend to kill. Honestly, we would have rather hit the road Friday afternoon, but our job needed to be done. And fortunately, Houston was close-by. We sat at the school and booked a hotel for that night. We got a great deal on a Crowne Plaza.

We soaked up everything the Crowne Plaza had to offer--there was a cheap movie theatre across the road where we watched How to Train Your Dragon in 3D. (Love that movie!)
There was a very ncie hot tub and pool in the courtyard, and we even ordered room service!

So it ended up pretty nicely. It was a nice relaxing weekend--it felt even more like a bonus weekend-off because it was so unexpected.

So that's how our last day ended up being our second-to-last day. Texas just really seems to like us and want to hang on.
