We stayed in Waco this weekend, not only because it was the closest city to our Monday school, but also because we were interested in attending the Church Under the Bridge. Kelsey and I heard about it in our Urban Ministry classes, and we were excited to see it in person. It started with a guy holding a Bible study with some homeless men under an I-35 bridge. Now, it's grown into a full-fledged church and ministry with several different locations. It is attended not only by the homeless of Waco, but also by college students from next-door Baylor University, suit-and-tie businessmen, and travelers like us.
Yes, it's literally under a bridge. Right under I-35. Traffic whirred by overhead, and competes against the church's sound equipment which is brought in every Sunday.
The woman who read Scripture toward the beginning of the service had, we found out later, finally gotten a job at local burger joint. However, they make her work Sundays, so she uses her break to walk over to church and read Scripture every Sunday.
A man, mentally handicapped and with no musical ability whatsoever, led us all in singing Jesus Loves Me--he led not with his melody, but his with passion.
This was the Church Under the Bridge.
