My grandmother Nelson has a friend names Margaret Delancey who lives right on route to Easton! In fact, we saved 2 miles by visiting her, avoiding some highway and taking backroads to her home. So we decided to give her a call and visit for a short while en route.
My grandparents know Margaret from her support of their medical ministry in Africa. She told us that she and her husband, in their 30's, once said they wanted to do medical missions. He was a dentist and she was a nurse. However, they were discouraged when someone told them they were too old. A sad thing for them to hear, but God used their passion for ministry and made them into great supporters of others' work thorugh money and prayer.
Grandma had told me that we'd find Margaret to be "a delight." Sure enough, she was! We first got a tour of her new home, an apartment in a residential community for the elderly. She moved there only because the hosue she had onced shared with her husband was getting too big. She mentioned that she's thankful for this place every time she hears someone else mowing the lawn! After our tour of the porch, kitchen, 2 beds and a 2 baths, we sat at the table for a snack. We talked for a long time over gingerale and whole wheat pretzels. And when the glasses ran dry, we just listened.
Margaret used to pray for evry missionary she knows everyday. However, the names in her Rolodex have become so many that she has now divided the names into groups for days of the week. But she is praying everyday. She is also writing an autobiography. And she has stories to tell! SHe once got locked in her own atick with no one home. She escaped by eventually climbing onto the garage rafters and jumping down on top of her car!
The most intriguing story she told was of meeting a woman whose name I can't remember - we'll call her June.
Margaret was on a plane into Newark and had a layover in Vancouver. June was at that layover and they found they were on the same flight into Newark. June was from Australia. She had been in Canada to get facial surgery. She was goign to stay in a hotel in Newark for three days (to let her face heal) before going to NYC to visit family. Margaret, for a reason she can't figure out, suggested June stay at her home for the three days instead of paying for a hotel.
So June accepted, a bit to Magaret's chagrin after she realized that she'd invited a total stranger to sta with her in a house where she lives alone! But June came anyway.
On the second day, over breakfast, Margaret said to June, "You know, I haven't always been a Christian." And thus proceded to tell the rest of the story of how she fell in love with the Lord and he saved her by grace. Margaret ended by telling June that she, too, could have the joy that Christ provides if she ever wanted it. June replied with "I want that. RIGHT NOW!" haha. She prayed the most beautiful prayer. The ladies went to the grocery store and June told everyone there that she had just asked Jesus into her heart!
June left to go visit NYC and after that tim, went to stay with Margaret for another week.
Margaret Delancey is a truly exceptional woman. We were at home right away, comforted by her snacks and her stories.
