Well, we finally made it. After 30 hours of flying and layovers we made it safely to Bangkok.
Our short 1.5 hour flight from Calgary to Seattle was with Horizon Air/ Alaska Air. Tip for all you future travellers out there - these flights are not comfy. Use WestJet or some other airline. The rest of our flights (Seatlle to Seoul, 11.5hours and Seoul to Bangkok, 5 hours), we flew Korean Air (last trip we flew Singapore Air). Mike and I both agree that Singapore Air is a better choice. The food tastier, the free stuff cooler, and the seats bigger. Ah well. We got into Bangkok around 2am. The biggest (and only) anxiety we both had while making our way off the plane was whether our luggage made it this time or not. We were pleased to see that yes, indeed our packs made it. We grabbed a metered taxi and made our way to the Montien Riverside Hotel - the sweet digs Mother Debbie hooked us up with as a Christmas gift (Thanks again, Ma). Anyhoo, to check out this totally awesome, super fancy place we stayed for our first two nights in Bangkok, go here: www.montien.com/riverside/.
After calling our parents to tell them we arrived safe and sound, we had showers then hit the hay. We got up at 8am for our free "American Breakfast" buffet. Seriously, this is the biggest, most amazing brekky buffet we have ever seen. After that we relaxed by the pool, played some cribbage, and went to bed early. Today we checked out of the Montien and made our way to TupTim B&B Guesthouse (check it out here: www.tuptimb-b.com ). It's the guesthouse Mike and I liked to stay in last time we were in Thailand. It seems to have increased quite a bit in price (a whole $3USD!) so tomorrow we're going to stay at a place reccommended by Karla, a friend I worked with at Starbucks and who we're meeting up with here in a few hours. We were also able to get used, yet the newest edition Lonely Planet books of Thailand and Cambodia. Mike was happy to save the extra moola buying used instead of brand new books and he definately has not lost his fantastic bargaining skills!
Although we don't plan to be in Bangkok too long, we both agree that it feels very much like home here. We feel familiar and comfortable staying here(despite the coup and bombings awhile back). The smells (although not always pleasant) and sights bring back good memories. It's great to be back! MJ More thumbnails ...
