Day 1( really 2)

Our day began leaving the house at 4pm for the stress filled drive to JFK. Thankfully, Mark "offered" to drive us and drop us off which was a huge help and took some of the initial stress away. Thanks to Pirate Pasquariello for tagging along too.

We exchanged US dollars for euros and pounds and got over the initial shock of how worthless our dollar is right now. 0.53 pounds for a dollar and 0.59 euros for a dollar. Ouch!

We had our last affordable meal and boarded our 8:30pm flight for Iceland. Landing in Iceland 5.5 hours later at ~6am their time really made us regret changing our initial plans of staying in Iceland for a few days. It seems like an amazing country and we will definitely be visiting it for real some time. Since our clocks were already screwed up and it was morning in Iceland, we decided to have a quick breakfast while waiting for our next flight. We chose something that everyone is familiar with: Vinarbrallo M/Sukkuladi. It was excellent but not like Mom used to make.

We said goodbye to Iceland and boarded our 7:40am flight to Paris and Harmony got some much needed sleep on this leg. She even slept through the take off which was definitely a first for her! A first for Mike was actually not having a 400lb fat woman with cheap perfume or an uncontrollable screaming ankle biter (correction: baby) sit next to him. It was pure bliss.

3.5 hours later we landed at Charles de Gaulle airport around 1pm local time. I think that calculates to ~Feb 2008 our time so we were all screwed up by now. We were very proud of ourselves as we successfully navigated our way through the massive airport and airport shuttles to find the RER train station. We boarded the RER B for a 40 minute train ride to the central Paris train station known as Gare de Nord. This station is massive and it took some time to find the Eurostar section but we found it and made it through both French and British customs to the waiting area. We were hungry so we bought a baguette sandwich, a coke, and a strange dessert. 10 Euros or $16! Let the exchange shock begin.

We boarded the high speed Eurostar train and sat behind a French man. As we were eating our lunch, waiting for the train to depart to London, two things hit us at once. Two stereotypes we have heard in the past immediately came true at the same time. French bread is hard as a rock and deodorant is trading very low on the French stock exchange. Not a good combination on a 2.5 hour train ride. Made us wish we brought some Axe spray.

We finally arrived at the beautiful St Pancras/King's Cross Station and simply walked 2 blocks to our first hotel, The Alhambra Inn. We checked into our London sized hotel room, freshened up, and hit the streets. We were a little hungry so we decided to eat our first London cuisine……a street hot dog. We continued to our first destination which was the British Museum since it was open until 8:30pm tonight. Since it was already 6:30, we had to move fairly quickly through the museum. It was spectacular and we could not believe the size and the amount of artifacts, especially since it was free to get in! We saw the Rosetta Stone, a massive Easter Island head, many beautiful Greco Roman sculptures, and much much more. We wandered slowly back to our hotel room and realized we were still hungry. Mike spotted a Mediterranean café and we shared a Lebanese platter with falafel, taboulah, pita bread, hummus spread, Mediterranean salad, and finished it off with two kinds of Baklava. All for only 7 pounds which is a steal in London. We are out to prove you can eat well but still affordable in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

We are absolutely exhausted now and need to get some rest as we have a 12 hour bus tour starting bright and early. We are headed to Stonehenge, the city of Bath, and Windsor Castle!

We hope you guys are enjoying traveling with us!
