After a wet night at Norseman we headed south towards Esperance stopping briefly in Salmon Gums for a rest. After the Nullarbor the countryside looks full to overflowing with trees. Before long we approached this smallish country town of Esperance overlooking fantastic beaches of the Southern Ocean. The caravan park is situated just out of the main CBD opposite a beach with an easy accessible nature trail. While the sun shone, we parked and set up the van and settled in for the four nights we planned to stay.

Woke up on Sunday morning and decided to do a circular drive around the district to see the  beautiful beaches, fantastic seascapes, wind farm and the famous pink lake, which had been described to us by Lesley, our daughter. Unfortunately it was not as pink as we expected and this is probably because it was a cloudy day. On returning to the town we were dismayed by the lack of places to have lunch. The town itself looked like it was suffering with many shops closed down and boarded up. We eventually found a restaurant on the town jetty close by the sailing club where we enjoyed a reasonably priced lunch. Margaret enjoyed her quiche and salad and I tucked into Hamburger, Chips and salad. As we arrived back at the caravan the skies opened and the rain began to fall.

Monday came along and the Cape Le Grand National Park was calling so we decided that as we were in the area it would be a pity not to see this renowned park.  The park entrance is 52 kilometre from Esperance but the road is good passing by farms running beef cattle. The park has many granite outcrops and fantastic beaches and little bays. The park authorities have camping sites available but with limited facilities. We had great fun climbing the rocky outcrops taking in the fantastic views along the coast. This is a lovely area to visit but there is not a great deal to see.  Fishing would be ok here but not for us today so we left and made our way back to town intent on visiting the local shops to get some provisions to last us for the week or so we had before we got back home.
On our last day in Esperance we had a big leisurely breakfast before spending the rest of the morning doing our laundry, washing the car, bringing the annexe down and talking to the other caravaners.  In the afternoon we still had plenty of time to walk along the jetty and watch the fisherman bring in their huge squid and clean them - quite a messy business if not done carefully.  Tomorrow we head to Albany.
