Mon, 16th
Four wheels good, two legs bad.

Started the day by trying to catch up blog after the weekend. Went to the bank to cash more traveller's cheques. Britney who advised the ill-informed teller the other day seemed to forget how to cash the cheques, asking advice about exactly the same things she advised about previously! "Do you have an account here?" No, I don't need one. She asked, "Did she (the other teller) charge you $10?" Nope, I shouldn't be charged for these. She muttered with a wave of her hand,"Oh fuck it......what the hell" and sorted out my cash. I was then asked if I was Australian! I explained I was over from the UK and following further questioning, that I was staying with a friend who I met on the internet. She looked shocked: "But isn't that dangerous?" I took my cash and shuffled off to Kroger's for veggie stuff and fruit.
America seemed to lead the way regarding veggie food in the 60s/70s but seems to fall far behind as far as availability is concerned with veggie burgers and the like being consigned to a small area in the frozen food department. On the way back from the shop, I felt like the lone pedestrian walking across the bridge with my four bags of food. I think the only walking people do here is between the car and the store. Perhaps I'm wrong and it's just a quiet time of day.
I found walking quite enjoyable and could take in my surroundings at a leisurely pace. I was able to spend forever watching the 'Don't Walk' signs and then the 'Walk' signs that start flashing as soon as you take a step off the kerb. 'Walk' means 'Run Like Hell!'
I also noticed the yellow school buses which must have still been around when I used to hop on them in the early 60s. It was like being in Havana. Perhaps before the embargo, the US and Cuba had a 'Buses for cars' swap scheme set up.
In the evening, we went off to Ryan's cub scout group and waited in the rain for a helicopter to appear and land on the sports field. The 'copter arrived to cheers from the kids, the kids marched in one door, out of the other and then it disappeared into the drizzly night sky.
We then went over to the local Methodist church where the kids received various awards. Along one wall I noticed a series of pictures of what appeared to be a white, middle class guy who's name is apparently 'Jesus'. One picture particularly caught my eye. A 'Jesus' with a big, mad laugh of the type worn by a lottery winner or someone who saw an old lady slip on a banana skin in a busy street had the following title below it: "Jesus Laughing". I really am glad to have had that explained to me. It could have been anything: "Jesus suppresses a fart", "Jesus quaffs magic mushrooms and sees God" or who knows? Even better, a quick search revealed there is a website:

Seriously, have a look at this site. Not only can you buy a (Copyright protected) 'Jesus Laughing' print, T-shirt, button, postcard etc. but you can buy the same with a 'Jesus Laughing of Color' version......basically the same image but with brown skin! You couldn't write this stuff.
Only in America....!
